On Thursday 7th October, 2010, the sun shined on 10 1/2
volunteers (the half helped eat some!) who helped pick around 35
boxes of apples (and some super sweet pears!) all in the Nab Wood
area of Shipley. It was an enjoyable day helped by my Mum and Dad's
provisions at lunch time of soup, apple cake and apple
flapjack.
It seemed to be a particularly good year for apples and the timing
was just right as the trees were laden and the fruit nicely
ripe. We visited 3 houses with 7 trees between them. In all
I've spotted around 70 trees in just this one area so there is
potential for a big scaling up of the project next year
perhaps.
So far we have donated to BIASAN (asylum seekers project), All
Saints Church Asylum Seekers drop-in, The Treehouse fair-trade
cafe, Apple Day (all the damaged apples made delicious juice at
this great event last Sunday), the Bradford Square-Mile Project and
John Gafney House which provides supported accommodation for adults
with disabilities.
